World War II Aircraft

Vidal Photographic Archive

The Vidal Photographic Archive (BIC), kept in the Museum of the Sea of Laxe, is composed of more than 130,000 images taken by the local photographers José María Vidal and his father, Plácido Vidal, graphic chroniclers of Laxe and the regions of Soneira and Bergantiños from the late 19th century to 1970.

In addition to portraits with the sea as a background, there are other black and white treasures among the documents such as photographs of shipwrecks or historical events such as emergency landings of World War II bombers on Traba beach. Some of these aircraft were sunk during the war in this part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Here, in the Laxe Sea Museum there is a corner with the remains of the WWII plane that landed in Traba de Laxe (communications equipment, a cockpit seat and personal effects).

Photographers of maritime events. The photographers Vidal and Ramón Caamaño (Muxía) were hired by the insurance companies to document the accidents of their ships in the area and to have a graphic proof of the shipwreck. Many of these photographs were published in the written press of the time. In our time, photo-journalists from the local newspapers took over covering the event, such as Manolo Lorenzo, José Manuel Casal, Foto Fuentes or Xosé Castro, among others.
