HISTORY
Loss of sardine shipment on Christmas Eve
The Ter was a 76 metre long steam freighter built in September 1880 at the Pearse shipyard in Stockton (England). The shipowner was Tintoré & Cía (Barcelona).
It came from Liverpool and was carrying sardines from Corucubión to Muros, bound for A Pobra do Caramiñal and Vigo. At eight o’clock in the morning on 23 December 1900 in the midst of a thick fog, Ter ran aground on the Os Meixidos shallows, although some sources cite Corrubedo shallows. Its iron hull could not bear the impact.
The 15 crew members managed to save themselves in three boats that reached the port of Muros.
