Shipwrecks route

Camariñas coastline

Camariñas has a central place in the history of the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death), and especially in the history of shipwrecks, with more than fifty events recorded along this stretch of coast. All have been collected and documented in the Shipwreck Route through new technologies and augmented reality.

The route, of about 23 kilometres, begins in Camelle and ends at the ruins of O Soberano castle (urban centre of Camariñas) passing through emblematic places such as Arou, Santa Mariña, the dune of Mount Blanco – where the endemic caramiña (crowberry) bush that gives its name to the municipality is preserved -, the inlet of Trece and Boi Point, the place where the H.M.S. Serpent was shipwrecked, or the Englishmen’s Cemetery, where most of the victims are buried.

Curious are the names that the sea gives to the land. On this stretch of coastline, as rugged and imposing as it is spectacular, is the islet of Laxe dos Defuntos, very close to Boi Point. If you carry a map, locate it!
