Plaque for H.M.S. Serpent
Garden of San Carlos
A plaque in memory of the victims of the shipwreck of the H.M.S. Serpent (10/11/1890) is preserved in this pleasant green space. Coinciding with the centenary of the battle of Elviña (1909), the British governor was going to travel to Camariñas to place it in Cape Vilán, but bad weather in the area truncated the official plans forcing the plaque to be left in the garden.
The Garden of San Carlos, located at one end of the Old City and next to the magnificent building of the Arquivo do Reino de Galicia (Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia), had been an old defensive bastion known as the Old Fortress where gunpowder was stored for the defence of the city against the French. After its abandonment, the space was recovered (18th century) as a garden by Don Carlos F. de Croix. Hence its name.
Lean out from the gallery! From the viewpoint, sheltered by the tall centennial elm trees, there is a magnificent view of the port and the estuary of A Coruña.
