The best rescue divers

Camelle and Arou

The courage and solidarity of seafarers to help those in distress is well known. In the past, it is known how the fishermen of Camelle and Arou risked their lives on numerous occasions to help in the rescue of the many shipwrecks along this rugged coastline.

In parallel, between 1898 – 1924, and due to the large number of shipwrecks in this area, the rescue station Barbeito Rodríguez y Compañía was established in Camelle, generating great wealth in the area. In addition to hiring crew for its ships, it was a school to train the best divers and professionals in these tasks.

By extension, the offices of the Barbeito Company became a reception centre for shipwrecks, insurance company representatives, customs personnel and consuls, since it was there that the first proceedings were conducted, providing lodging and means of transport.

Port of Camelle. In addition to the Museo Man, linked to the Prestige disaster, we find the anchor of the English ship City of Agra (1897) at the end of the Camelle dock, and its bell crowns the church of the Holy Spirit. The heroic attitude of the inhabitants of Camelle and Arou in this rescue even led them to be decorated by the English crown.
