Maritime traffic control

Mount Enxa

The creation of the Finisterre sea corridor, some 22 miles from the coast (33 km) considerably reduced the number of merchant ship accidents. In this area, the Zonal Maritime Traffic Coordination Centre of Finisterre, located in Mount Enxa (Porto do Son), controls the navigation corridor of the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death), complementing the work of the control tower of the Barrié de la Maza dock in A Coruña.

According to international regulations, all ships have to report to this service when crossing the so-called delay lines 130 to Cape Vilan and 75 to Cape Finisterre. This can improve response speed in the event of an accident or vessel in distress.

Claim granted. The Finisterre device was a claim from the guilds and the association of nautical-fishing graduates. The system distances the vessels a minimum of 21.7 nautical miles, which preserves three important fishing grounds, heavily frequented by the inshore fleet.
