Ara Solis

Finisterre Lighthouse

Mount Cabo protects the estuary of Corcubión, about 5 kilometres to the south from the town of Finisterre and parallel to the granite Mount Pindo. At the end of the cliff stands the mythical lighthouse of Finisterre, the oldest of the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) junto con el de las islas Sisargas (1853), and where thousands of pilgrims end their Camino de Santiago. At the top of Mount O Facho (242 metres) it is supposed that the Ara Solis of Antiquity was used for the celebration of solar rites.

In addition to its lantern, another of the characteristic elements of this set is the Siren, popularly known as “the cow of Finisterre”, an instrument to face a very frequent meteorological phenomenon in this place. The Siren came into operation in 1889 for days when fog prevented the lighthouse light from being seen. It emits two shrill sounds every minute, with a range of 25 miles (46 km) in average time.

Finish the Camino under the sea. Contrary to other places in Galicia, you can practice recreational diving in almost any wind with the exception of the south wind in the estuary of Corcubion. Even with the dreaded north wind! Did you know this curiosity? Finishing the Camino de Santiago under the sea would undoubtedly be a different way to end this experience and the journey.
